Commemorating the Third Anniversary of Katrina: August 29, 2008

Aug. 29: Stand with the Survivors // Rally at FEMA // 3rd Anniversary of Katrina

Three years after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans remains devastated by
a man-made disaster that could have been prevented, and which federal,
state and local governments have magnified by funding new prisons and
public housing demolition instead of permanent housing and critical
services. The Crescent City now has the highest incarceration rate in
the country, and 57% fewer black residents. With a drastically reduced
rental housing population, no plan for long-term housing for
survivors, and with temporary funding set to expire March 2009,
thousands of residents are still in crisis, and nearly as many are
refugees. Still, New Orleans is rarely mentioned as a priority by either
Republican or Democratic presidential candidates.

Right to the City-Mid-Atlantic is hosting a national day of action in
solidarity with Katrina & Rita survivors. We will rally at FEMA, which
is emblematic of the federal government’s failure to protect
residents’ human rights. We’re calling on the government to stop
promoting incarceration and demolition of supportive housing, and to
invest in community rebuilding that centers a permanent solution to the
housing crisis, mental health, domestic violence and other crisis services,
and public education.

August 29, 11:30am – 1:30pm

(L’Enfant Plaza Metro/70 Bus)

Protest the Discovery Channel, Save the Planet?

Will protests against Discovery Channel programming - programming that should be saving thwe planet but isn’t –  really advance the struggle against climate change and its impacts? Someone is planning just such a protest. You can read more about this questionable effort at: http://www.savetheplanetprotest.com. You may have seen the ad Tuesday’s Washington Post Express.: “Save the Planet. Protest Against the Discovery Channel.”

I just have a few comments about the nature of this effort and why I think it is a bad idea:

1. The premise is probably way wrong. The Discovery Channel is not airing programs to save the planet; the programs are meant to provide information, advice, and entertainment. Arguably, the entertainment part is the most important of those three.

2. The standards are way too high! The Discovery Channel is only providing informational programming to generate advertising revenue.

3. A different standard is way too high! The Discovery Channel is not a charity and in any case lacks the power to save the planet.

4. What are Discovery Channel officials supposed to do? Presumably the protest organizers have specific and credible ideas, but I doubt it. The only possibility that occurs to me is that they want to pressure Discovery Channel executives to start airing new types of programs. I don’t feel good about the odds. See items 1,2, and 3 for an explanation.

5. A positive suggestion or two - I totally agree that television shows could be used as vehicles for social change. The trick is to be relevant to peoples’ lives, to be practical, and to advertise like crazy.  Why not create programming that helps us discovery new, realistic lifestyle choices and products and services?
