Please note: Your pies are ONLY available for pick-up at the location you select when you place your order.

DC Child Care Collective

The DC Child Care Collective is a small all-volunteer group that provides free childcare to progressive groups working for social justice.  We provide childcare as an act of solidarity and prioritize providing this service to groups that are primarily led by low-income women of color.   It is our mission to make childcare that is safe, fun and empowering available to parents working to further social and political change.

Currently, we provide childcare to Empower DC, Women Empowered Against Violence and the Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Research Project.  We would like to make free childcare available to more groups and organizations; to do so we need to build a larger volunteer base.

To achieve this goal we are planning a Volunteer Orientation for September 10th and 17th from 7pm-9pm.  We ask volunteers to make a commitment to provide childcare at least 6 times over the course of 6 months and attend additional trainings that we provide.

If you want to support parents in DC working toward social change and if you like spending time with kids (even if you don’t have much experience) we would love to have you volunteer with us. If you are interested, please fill out the volunteer application (attached and available at our website and send it to dckids@gmail.com.

The deadline for applications is September 2nd, 2008.

We are also trying to get word out to as many folks as possible about this orientation and our work, so please forward this information along to your networks.  By doing this you’ll help us grow, which in the long term means we’ll be able to provide free quality childcare to more organizations in DC.

If you have any questions or would like more information about the DCCC please feel free to email dckids@gmail.com.

YouTube Activism: Reporting from a Cultural Civil War Raging in NoVa

Statement from Eric Byler and Annabel Park:

9500 Liberty” is an experimental documentary about how (and why) the
immigration issue has been used to create a climate of racial
hostility in Northern Virginia — a region that until recently had
been known as an increasingly diverse and inclusive society.

www.youtube.com/9500Liberty

Virginia’s state election on November 6, 2007 has been positioned as a
“referendum on immigration,” and may well be a sneak preview of a key
political strategy for winning the White House in 2008.

As an introduction, please view this clip which includes disturbing
footage of a racist tirade directed at Hispanic children in Manassas,
Virginia:

Help us create a constructive forum on immigration by posting comments
on our virtual town hall.  And please forward these links to friends
who may share our concern for the state of our democracy.

The 7th Street Garden is a highly productive community food garden wherein participants learn to grow, cook and market produce; the garden’s produce is given to low-income D.C. residents.  The garden unites diverse communities through the provision of local food production. Urban gardens not only directly alleviate food insecurity, but also foster trust and camaraderie amongst program participants.  This relationship ultimately leads to the development of strong communities.

Free Jena 6 demonstration — Oct. 2 @ 5pm

WE DEMAND: FREE MYCHAL BELL AND THE JENA 6

The denial of bail for Mychal Bell on September 21, one day after the massive march in Jena, Louisiana, and the continued persecution of the other five members of the Jena 6 is a gross violation of their civil rights. The judge, prosecutor and police are guilty of perpetuating this racist outrage against the Jena 6. All communities must stand together to reject and condemn racism.

A broad cross section of organizations are uniting to free the Jena 6.
