Civics & Coffee is an informational series on a variety of subjects related to politics, activism and social networking. The idea is to encourage the sharing of information and knowledge between academics, experts, professionals, and activists with the members of Idealist DC and the greater Washington, DC community.

Online Video for Social Change 2.0

Learn in just a few hours how to film, edit and upload video footage for your organization, group or even for yourself. Our featured speakers will be Jill Foster and Phil Shapiro, online video producers who will speak on the subject of creating online videos for advocacy and social change. This event will be a hands-on workshop.  

Split into Beginning and Advanced levels, Jill will cover Online Video for Beginners where she will teach basic equipment, software, and steps to publish video footage online all the while catering content to your organization’s specific mission or goal. In addition, learn how to recognize (and make) sound bites through online conversations or interviews. Using such tools as Panasonic’s PV-180 camera, Apple’s iMovie and YouTube. 

Phil Shapiro will cover the Advanced level and will focus on how to create videos without using a camera. As well as learning more advanced techniques and software, such as Camtasia, for online video. You will also learn how to string together photos or other graphics, along with narration (or music) in iMovie, iPhoto and Windows Movie Maker and of course, YouTube.  

About the speakers: Jill Foster and Phil Shapiro are founding members of DC Media Makers < http://dcmediamakers.wordpress.com/ >, a local organization of multimedia artists, bloggers and filmmakers. 

Jill Foster < http://housewifery.wordpress.com/ > is a producer, filmmaker and video blogger (aka vlogger), whose work has been shown at film festivals and of course online. 

Phil Shapiro is a successful vlogger and founding advocate of the tech-advocacy group Digital Divide Network < http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/pshapiro >, an interactive online community designed to help digital divide activists around the world to work together and bridge the technological divide across all economic and social groups.
